His Holiness, the late Patriarch Aphrem Barsoum declared that the name of our church
and people should be the Syriac-Aramaic Church or the Syriac-Aramaic people.
Later, His Holiness the late Patriarch Yacoub III affirmed this in an eccyclical which
he wrote to those in the USA who were confused about different names that people used.

The use of the word ARAMAIC has always referred to our church and people.

The benefit of using the Aramaic name, instead of Syriac, is to distinguish us from
       the Arabic speaking people.
Aramaic was the largest language of all the Middle East
until the days of the Romans. Afterwards, the land of Aram became known as Syria.

Now a days, if we say we are Syrians, others may assume that we are Arab Syrians.
For accuracy’s sake, it is better to say that we are Syriac-Arameans; and that we
      speak Syriac-Aramaic.
